Samsung Display will mass produce AMOLED display panels for 8- and 10-inch tablets at its A2 plant beginning early next year, for the first time in industry history.

The company will supply the AMOLED panels to the Wireless Business Division of Samsung Electronics, which, with them, is expected to build a lineup of premium tablets. Samsung Electronics will simultaneously launch a new smartphone (tentatively named Galaxy S5) and a new tablet PC with an AMOLED screen early next year.

Samsung Electronics plans to build a lineup of premium tablets with AMOLED tablets, while its low-end lineup will consist of conventional LCD tablets.

Samsung’s new AMOLED tablets are expected to wage a competition with Apple’s new iPad Air and iPad mini 2.

An Industry source said that Samsung Display has chosen to produce 8- and 10-inch displays at the request of Samsung Electronics. “Samsung Electronics must have judged that they can secure competitiveness in hardware if they produce tablets with bigger screens than those of iPad mini or Air while maintaining the size, weight and thickness at similar levels,” he said.

Gartner, an American IT research and advisory firm, has predicted that about 184.43 million tablets would be produced globally this year, which is a whopping 53 percent increase over the previous year. It expected tablet production to continue to increase next year, recording a 43 percent growth.

Lee Min-hui, an analyst of I’M Investment & Securities, said that Samsung has set a goal of selling 100 million tablets next year. “If it achieves the goal, Samsung Electronics will likely emerge as the world’s No. 1 supplier of tablets in two years,” he said.
